2005 Pre-Conference Institutes

General Information

Pre-Conference workshops are scheduled for Wednesday, November 16, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm with a 1 1/2 hour lunch break. Presenters have requested that participants attend the same workshop for the entire scheduled time period and HTN requires this due to limited space in the workshops. Participants are expected to attend for the entire day and luncheon is included in the $150 fee.

The HTN office requires that all attendees pre-register for the Pre-Conference session that they wish to attend. Workshop materials for these sessions will be available only to those who pre-register for the session. Registrants that do not indicate their session preference are not on the pre-conference registration list until that requirement is met and will not be able to attend sessions that are full. Session choice must be indicated in order for registration to be processed. Pre-Conference sessions have limited availability and enrollment is assigned based on time of completed registration. HTN cannot guarantee that you will be able to attend the session you choose. If we are unable to fulfill your request we will inform you and allow you to either choose another session (if available) or refund your money.

Registration (you must choose one of the four sessions below and circle it on the Conference Registration Form)

A  Plain Talk’s Second Generation:  Successful Program Replication

Despite the declining teen birth rate in the U.S., the rate is still unacceptably high, while the rate of STIs including HIV/AIDS among teens is disturbing, particularly for Latino and African American youth.  Plain Talk/Hablando Claro was developed to address these challenges by working directly with parents and other supportive adults to improve adult communication with teens, as well as increase sexually active teens’ access to contraceptive services.  Launched in 1993, Plain Talk now has more than ten years of experience, evaluation data, and a structured replication process including training, technical assistance and data collection, to help new communities successfully replicate it. The Plain Talk/Hablando Claro programs in St. Paul, Minnesota and in New Orleans, Louisiana represent successful replication of the program model.

The Institute will focus on providing an overview of Plain Talk/Hablando Claro and examining case studies in St. Paul and New Orleans to help program planners, managers, and service providers develop skills to:

 1)      Plan and implement Plain Talk/Hablando Claro’s core strategies

2)      Understand the basics of program replication; and

3)      Craft core messages to recruit community stakeholders, including residents, funders, and advocates.

Lead Presenters:  Kara Beckman, Plain Talk/Hablando Claro St. Paul; Tammi Fleming, Public/Private Ventures (former Director, Plain Talk New Orleans); Debra Delgado, Annie E. Casey Foundation; Geri Summerville, Public/Private Ventures; Karen Canova, Public/Private Ventures; and Sarabeth Shreffler, Public/Private Ventures.
